About Lenie
Lenie van den Bulk has been working as a visual artist since 1984. She mainly makes abstract, colourful oil paintings and collages, as well as jewellery made from natural materials.
Background
Lenie began with portraits. Already at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam (1980-1984) she felt a growing need to paint abstractly. Abstract and impressionistic, but not without meaning: she wants to say something through the abstract as well.
For her, experiences and memories have their own form, their own colour and their own rhythm. Landscapes, moods, moments from her life: in paintings, collages and cloud boxes. Sometimes layered, sometimes transparent.
In 1985 and 1986 she received a grant from the Centrum Beeldende Kunst Rotterdam. Since then her work has been shown in galleries in Rotterdam, Haarlem, Spijkenisse, Leeuwarden, Paris and Barcelona, among other places.
In her own words
Everything in me has to bounce back and forth. Surprise, tempo and dynamics. Live!
Archaeological painting
"When I paint, I go in search of recognising an experience or a memory," says Lenie. She compares it to a mine: you know the ground contains something, and it can take days, weeks or months before you suddenly strike a rich vein.
Art journalist Peter Ouwerkerk called it archaeological painting: she adds by taking away. Her landscapes are observations from a bird's-eye view, memories in abstraction. "But what remains above all," he wrote, "are the ever-glistening colours."
You can download the Galerie Duo Duo booklet with her paintings and collages from 1984 to 2006.

Alongside her work as an artist, Lenie earned her doctorate in 2011 at Utrecht University with the thesis "Later kan ik altijd nog worden wat ik wil", on students' sense of status, self-worth and future outlook in secondary education. The thesis and the English translation are available under downloads.
